Founded in 1920, the ACLU works in courts, legislatures, and communities to ensure that these rights are upheld for everyone, regardless of background. With 54 local offices across the U.S., the ACLU’s attorneys participate in more Supreme Court cases than any other private organization and partner with organizers and volunteers on the ground. Our intersectional work encompasses a wide range of civil liberties issues, including achieving full equality for LGBTQ+ individuals, pursuing racial justice, establishing privacy protections in the digital age, reforming the criminal legal system, and preserving voting rights and access to healthcare. With over 4 million members, volunteers, and supporters, the ACLU is dedicated to safeguarding the rights of all individuals across the nation.
The ACLU is a network of national and state affiliate offices filing cases in both state and federal courts. In addition, our office in D.C. lobbies Congress to pass bills that advance or defend civil liberties and defeat those that do not, and our affiliates work in state houses across the country to do the same.
